Opening Plenary Speakers

Patrice A. Harris, MD, MA

Biography

Dr. Patrice Harris, a psychiatrist from Atlanta, was the 174th president of the American Medical Association, and the organization’s first African-American woman to hold this position. Dr. Harris has diverse experience as a private practicing physician, county public health director, patient advocate and medical society lobbyist.

Dr. Harris currently spearheads the AMA’s efforts to end the opioid epidemic and has been chair of the AMA Opioid Task Force since its inception in 2014.

A recognized expert in children’s mental health and childhood trauma, Dr. Harris has led efforts on both local and national levels to integrate public health, behavioral health and primary care services with supports for employment, housing and education.

A fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Harris continues in private practice and currently consults with both public and private organizations on health service delivery and emerging trends in practice and health policy. She is an adjunct assistant professor in the Emory Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and an adjunct clinical assistant professor in psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Morehouse School of Medicine.


Susan Moffatt-Bruce, MD, FRCSC, PhD, MBA, MBOE, FACS

Biography

Susan D. Moffatt-Bruce, MD, FRCSC, PhD, MBA, MBOE, FACS joined the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as Chief Executive Officer in January 2020.

Dr. Moffatt-Bruce is a world-class leader and surgeon, with sharp business acumen and a passion for value-driven care. She holds degrees from McGill University, Dalhousie University, University of Cambridge and the Ohio State University. A funded research scientist and practicing thoracic surgeon, she has held leadership positions in numerous national and international associations. Previously, Dr. Moffatt-Bruce has worked as a Chief Quality and Patient Safety officer, and senior hospital executive.

Biography

Dr. Becky Fisher is a PGY5 resident in General Surgery in the south west of England. She is currently completing a Masters in Surgical Education at Imperial College London focusing on the work life balance of surgical trainees who are also mothers. She has a passion for improving surgical education, and edited an undergraduate surgical textbook whilst at medical school in Edinburgh. She can be found most days on Twitter at @beckybeckyfish.


Adam Garber, MD, MSc.(Ed.), FRCSC

Biography

Dr. Adam Garber received his medical degree in 2010 from Western University and completed his Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2015 from the University of Ottawa. He completed a Senior Fellowship in Simulation Education through the Department of Innovation in Medical Education in 2016, University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre (uOSSC) and a master’s degree in health professions education through McMaster in 2017. Presently he is an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Ottawa. His roles for the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology include Associate Program Director, Simulation Fellowship Program Director, and Competence Committee Chair. He is a member of the uOSSC simulation fellowship faculty. His academic interests lie in innovative simulation techniques, team training, and patient experience.

Biography

Dr. Glenn Posner is an Associate Professor and Clinician Educator in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Ottawa. He graduated from McGill Medical School in 1999 before moving to Ottawa for residency. After completing his training in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2004, he worked at the Montfort Hospital before moving to The Ottawa Hospital in 2009. He has served as the residency program director as well as the Vice-Chair of Education for his department. He is the inaugural Medical Director of the Simulation Patient Safety Program at The Ottawa Hospital, and the Medical Director of the University of Ottawa Skills & Simulation Centre. Glenn is a Simulation Educator for the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada and has served on the planning committee of Simulation Summit for five years, coordinating the popular SimWars/SimTrek event.  Dr. Posner’s program of research relates to the assessment of the intrinsic CanMEDS roles and patient-safety competencies using all forms of simulation.

Biography

Dr. Will Flanary is an ophthalmologist, writer, and comedian who moonlights in his free time as “Dr. Glaucomflecken” on Twitter and TikTok. Effortlessly blending humor with education, Dr. Glaucomflecken has spent the last 5 years informing audiences on a wide range of topics, like navigating the confusing world of over-the-counter eyedrops, the horrifying consequences of sleeping in contact lenses, and his recent experiences as a patient in the medical system. His writing has been featured in The Ophthalmologist and The British Medical Journal. He has a passion for educating non-ophthalmologists about ophthalmology and is a frequent speaker at medical conferences across multiple specialties, including emergency medicine

Rose Hatala, MD, MSc, FRCPC

Biography

Dr. Rose Hatala is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC), and the Director of UBC’s Centre for Health Education Scholarship’s Clinical Educator Fellowship. She is a palliative care physician and general internist. Her research interests and publications focus on work-based and high-stakes assessment methods as well as feedback and entrustment in clinical supervision. In her free time, Dr. Hatala can be found in the outdoor wonderland that is British Columbia.


Jonathan Sherbino, BSc MD MEd FRCPC FAcadMEd DRCPSC(CE)

Biography

Dr. Jonathan Sherbino is an emergency physician and trauma team leader. He is the Assistant Dean, Health Professions Education Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, and a professor of medicine, McMaster University. Jonathan is the past chair of the Specialty Committee for Emergency Medicine, Royal College of Physicians &Surgeons of Canada.

Jonathan is a medical educator and researcher, co-editing the CanMEDS 2015 Framework and co-hosting the KeyLIME (Key Literature in Medical Education) podcast with an audience in more than 40 countries. He has published more than 150 papers and given numerous plenary and keynote addresses.  Jonathan is an award-winning teacher, including the national 2018 Canadian Emergency Medicine Teacher of the Year.

His research focuses on competency-based medical education and clinical reasoning.

Farhan Bhanji, MD, MSc (Ed), FRCPC, FAHA

Biography

Dr. Farhan Bhanji is a Professor of Pediatrics (critical care) and Director of Education at the Steinberg Centre for Simulation and Interactive Learning at McGill University. He serves as the Associate Director of Assessment Strategy at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, which includes both supporting the development of workplace-based assessment and working with Exam Board Chairs in 68 Specialties to provide valid high-stakes certification examinations. He has received multiple awards as a Clinical Teacher (including the local Kaplan Award for the top clinical teacher in the Department of Pediatrics), Educational Innovator, Researcher (research awards at multiple conferences and the inaugural Richard and Sylvia Cruess Faculty Scholar at McGill University) and Leader. He has been fortunate to speak at conferences around the world on education (clinical teaching, simulation and how people learn) and assessment, and was the Visiting Professor in-residence at the Medical Education Development Centre of Gifu University, Japan in 2013. Most importantly he is the proud father of 3 incredible kids who amaze him daily!


Aimee Charnell, MD

Biography

Dr. Aimee Charnell is a surgical research fellow from Leeds, United Kingdom. She has temporarily stepped aside from her general surgical training to complete a PhD in Medical Education within Leeds Institute of Medical Education. She is a member of the Edinburgh Royal College of Surgeons’ Faculty of Surgical Trainers. As a keen educator, she plays a large role in the school’s final exams, writing and blueprinting the Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) and acting as a chief examiner. She is also a final year external examiner.

Dr. Charnell enjoys teaching in various settings, including the postgraduate professional development programme and in her role as the Clinical Training Officer for her Army Reserves unit. In her spare time, you can typically find her up a mountain or trying to break out of an escape room.


Viren Naik, MD, MEd, MBA, FRCPC

Biography

Dr. Viren Naik is the Director of Assessment for the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, a Professor of Anesthesiology, and the R.S. McLaughlin Professor of Medical Education at the University of Ottawa. He has 20 years of experience as an educator, and oversees the credentialing of specialist training and the assessment, including examinations, for all medical specialties in Canada.  He has over 100 peer reviewed publications and grants, and has received honour awards for his international contributions to education. He serves as the Medical Lead for the regional Medical Assistance in Dying Program which has been recognized nationally as a practice leader.


Adam Sawatsky, MD, MS

Biography

Dr. Adam Sawatsky is an associate professor of medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic. He serves as a clinician-educator and medical education scholar within the Mayo Clinic Internal Medicine Residency Program. He is Program Director for the General Internal Medicine Fellowship and Outpatient Firm Chief for Scholarship in the Internal Medicine Residency Program. He has developed expertise in qualitative methods in medical education research and has published articles in the areas of professional identity formation, global health, mentorship, coaching and self-directed learning. He is recognized locally and nationally for his research efforts and mentorship of residents and junior faculty in medical education research. His current research interest lies in exploring professional identity formation in graduate medical education. He has a wife and two sons, and enjoys spending time outdoors. He can be found hiking and backpacking with his family in the north woods of Minnesota.


Flavia Senkubuge, MD, FCPHM, PhD

Biography

Dr. Flavia Senkubuge is a medical doctor, public health medicine specialist and global public health advocate.  Dr Senkubuge is the President of the Colleges of Medicine South Africa (CMSA). Her election is historic in so many ways as she is first black woman and only the third woman in the CMSA’s 65 years to hold the position.

She is the current chair of the WHO/Afro region African Advisory Council on Research and Development (AACHRD), concerned with advising the WHO/Afro regional director on matters concerning health research and development in Africa. She is also the president of Women in Global Health (WGH) South Africa. In addition, she is the Vice-President of the African Federation of Public Health Association (AFPHA), an organization concerned with advocating and promoting public health in Africa.

She is the former board chair of the Health Systems Trust (HST), a pioneering non-profit organisation based in South Africa that has been at the fore front of the South African Health System for more than 20 years and whose work now expands on the African continent with key global partners. In 2015

Dr. Senkubuge was elected as a Young Physician Leader for 2015 by the prestigious global Inter Academy Medical Panel (IAMP).  Her work is rooted in the African philosophy of ‘Ubuntu’ (I am because we are). At heart she is a philanthropist and is passionate about mentoring young people.

Catherine R. Lucey, MD, MACP

Executive Vice Dean, Vice Dean for Education

Biography

Dr. Catherine R. Lucey is Vice Dean for Education and Executive Vice Dean for the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She directs the undergraduate, graduate and continuing medical education programs of the School of Medicine and the Office of Medical Education. Dr. Lucey is on the executive management team for the School of Medicine’s Differences Matters Initiative and oversees other strategic initiatives for the medical school and the campus.

Dr. Lucey’s national portfolio of work has included membership on the National Academy of Medicine, the Board of Directors of the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Board of Medical Specialties. Additionally, she served as Chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine. In these roles, she has worked to influence the direction of academic medicine and the continuum of medical education in ways aligned with UCSF’s approach to education, culture and community.

Dr. Lucey joined UCSF from Ohio State University, where she was Vice Dean for Education for the College of Medicine and Associate Vice President for Health Sciences Education for the Office of Health Sciences. She completed her residency in internal medicine at UCSF, including service as Chief Resident at the UCSF‐affiliated San Francisco General Hospital.

She earned her medical degree from Northwestern University School of Medicine.
