A dynamic and practical program for international medical educators and residents, the International Conference on Residency Education (ICRE) is the world’s largest conference devoted exclusively to advancing residency education. Our upcoming conference in Ottawa, Canada (September 19-21, 2024), will feature six plenaries, 17 learning tracks, more than 60 workshops and 180 poster and paper presentations.

Programming will take place at the Shaw Centre and Westin Ottawa Hotel. The theme of this year’s conference is Professionalism, Ethics, and Identity in Residency Education: Evolving in a Changing Landscape

Plenary speakers

Each year, ICRE offers cutting-edge and thought-provoking perspectives on medical education (MedEd) through its plenary lineup. In addition to dynamic lectures from leadership experts, the 2024 program features a captivating Top Research in Residency Education session, a theatre-based simulation experience, a powerful panel exploring whether the term professionalism is holding us back, a critical conversation around the weaponization of professionalism and the impacts on our trainees and the faculty who teach them, a powerful call to action for each of us to figure out who we are, and how that identity can best serve out patients, trainees, and communities, and more!

ICRE Pre-conference courses

Focused, in-depth pre-conference courses give participants a unique opportunity to explore particular medical education topics through half-day or full-day sessions. The extra time allows for more critical exploration of topics and stronger skill-building in each area of study.

Pre-conference courses will be held Wednesday, September 18 and Thursday, September 19, 2024. Courses held on Thursday will conclude prior to the ICRE 2024 opening plenary.

The Royal College Simulation Educator Training (SET) Course was developed to improve medical training capacity in Canada through faculty development and serve as the foundation for the growth of simulation-based health educator competency across Canada. It includes a spectrum of content designed to advance the skills of both novice and intermediate simulation educators.  

The course consists of 12 self-study asynchronous modules with a corresponding 2-day in-person session and 1 virtual orientation. Authored and peer-reviewed by healthcare experts from various specialties and backgrounds. The online content includes self-assessment questions, answers, and evidence-based rationale helping you to choose best practice knowledge and address skill gaps. Participants will come together in person for 2 full days. The in-person course is designed to provide practical experiences, all in an interactive environment that combines instruction with hands-on training in a small group setting for maximum learning.  

This activity is an Accredited Simulation Activity (Section 3). You may claim a maximum of 35 hours.  

Learning Outcomes 

Having engaged in the Royal College Simulation Educator Training Course, participants will be able to: 

  • Design and implement a simulation-based curriculum across the continuum of education, using a multitude of modalities and settings and informed by a variety of guiding conceptual frameworks. 
  • Conduct learning conversations that include applying debriefing skills toward making these conversations safer and more satisfying for everyone. 
  • Include simulation-based performance assessment where appropriate. 
  • Structure meaningful evaluation of simulation programs. 
  • Provide leadership for the initial development or ongoing sustainability of a simulation program. 
  • Consider themselves members of a vibrant community of practice.

Workshop for New Program Directors

This workshop is returning to an in-person format and will provide participants with educational concepts, practical hints and guidelines to orient and support them in assuming the responsibilities of their role as new program directors. Participants will have the opportunity to attend various interactive workshops designed by current and past program directors, to improve their knowledge of Royal College policies and processes, and experience personal development in their new roles.
